Is Your Near Vision Fading?

Presbyopia starts around 40. The lens inside the eye stiffens and stops refocusing up close, so menus, labels and your phone go soft. Most people put it down to tiredness or bad light. See what is really happening, check yourself in under two minutes, and find out which lenses fit your life.

Wearing distance glasses? Hold your phone at arm's length and tilt your head back. If that helps, read on.

A simulation, not a measurement. Your own near point depends on your prescription and the light.

Four Quick Questions

Indicative only. This is not an eye examination or a diagnosis.

Are you over 40?

Do you hold your phone or a menu further away than you used to?

Do you struggle to read in dim light, such as a restaurant?

Do you take your glasses off, or push them up, to read?

Reading test

Hold your phone at normal reading distance, about 40 cm. Take off reading glasses if you wear them. Tap the smallest line you can read comfortably.

Phone brightness and screen size change what you can read here, which is exactly why a proper test matters.

What is happening

Not Tired. Not the Lighting

From around 40 the lens inside the eye loses its flexibility. Your distance prescription stays right, but it becomes slightly too strong for reading. Dim light makes the pupil open wider, which makes the blur worse. That is why the restaurant menu is the first thing to go.

Freeform varifocals are surfaced digitally to your prescription, your frame and how you hold your head, so the clear zone is wide where you need it rather than a narrow corridor.
